AI’s Un-Learning Problem

The Jinx Of It: Researchers say it is almost impossible to make an AI “forget” the things it has already seen and learned from.

How It Started? One day James Zou, a professor at Stanford University, received an email from UK Biobank, requesting a removal of some of the participants’ data. The thing was, he had already fed the data to the algorithm & used it to train it.

 đŸ”‘ The Key Takeaways:

  • As explained by James Zou, it is nearly impossible to remove user’s data from a trained AI model

  • The only way to remove a data from an AI Model is to reset it, which is also a difficult task

  • AI models get larger and learn more, without any solution to delete users’ data deletion and their privacy

  • This is a problem that will affect everyones’ privacy

  • AI models are used in industries like Medical Care and Finance, where it is exceptionally important to protect privacy

But, Why is it so hard to delete the data? AI models are not lines of code, that can be selectively removed. AI models are learned set of statistical relations between points in dataset. Once the model learns this relationship, there is really no way to have it ignore selective parts of what it learnt.

20 AI Tools You Need To Know About

We will be covering tricks and tips for each of these tools in detail in the upcoming newsletters, including video reviews and quick guides on how to get the best.

 Should Colleges Allow AI-Generated Submissions?

With the rise of AI, an important question arises: Is using AI for College Applications plagiarism or do they democratize student access to help.

It is no secret, that all the students have access to ChatGPT. Some educators are concerns that this will be the loss of genuine individuality in applications essays and the potential hindrance of critical thinking and storytelling skills in students.

However, others see these tools as a way to level the playing field for the students who lack resources and access to essay coaching.

We are unsure, as to what the consensus will be between the colleges on this, as most of them have no clear policies on AI usage.

Not Everyone is Excited About AI - Research Shows

A Pew Research Center survey shows that growing number of Americans are concerned about the role of AI in their daily lives.

  • 52% of Americans express more concern than excitement about AI

  • Only 10% feel more excited than concerned, and 36% have mixed feelings

  • Concerns have risen by 14 percentage points since Dec 2022

  • Awareness of AI is increasing as 90% of adults have heard about it

  • Demographically, older adults (ages 65 and older) are more concerned about AI than younger ones (ages 18 to 29)

  • Views on AI by use case vary, however, privacy concerns are more negative, with 53% believing AI hurts people's personal information privacy
